# Bitcoin × AI: three convergences

Network Effect, based in Rennes, France, helps SMEs and mid-sized companies make the most of two shifts that arrive at the same time: artificial intelligence, which makes production abundant, and Bitcoin, the only money with a fixed supply. The two forces meet on three precise points: scarcity, agents and sovereignty. This page explains each one and points to our resources for more.

> Everything that can be copied will cost zero. Everything that cannot will cost a lot. Your strategy lives on the line between the two.

## What will AI never be able to copy?

What AI cannot copy.

AI produces text, code, images, analysis and advice at zero marginal cost. For thirty years the economy rewarded what scales: build once, duplicate forever. AI takes that logic to its end. What was scarce, technical expertise, becomes common. What was common, access and context, becomes scarce.

For a leader, the question changes nature. It is no longer “how do I produce more?” but “what can AI not take away from me?”. Three things hold their value:

- **Your context**: the company's history, its customers, its local balance of power, what your teams know without ever having written it down. A generic AI doesn't have it. An AI fed with your corpus does.
- **Trust**: a relationship built over ten years isn't generated in ten seconds.
- **A fixed-supply money**: 21 million units, not one more, verifiable by anyone every ten minutes. In a world where everything gets printed, money included, Bitcoin is the one thing that doesn't.

Bitcoin's value doesn't rest on a promise but on a cost nobody can fake: the energy spent to produce each block. It is the old logic of gold, carried onto the internet. For a company, it is a treasury asset that depends on no central bank, and a discipline: what you hold doesn't get diluted.

> When everything can be printed, only what can't be printed counts.

## How does an AI agent pay its bills?

Money for machines.

In October 2023 we published “AI, IoT: do machines need a wallet?”. The answer was yes. Three years later, AI agents buy compute, data and APIs, and are starting to get paid for their work.

An agent is neither a natural nor a legal person. It can't open a bank account or hold a card. The legacy payment system is closed to it: too slow (days to finality), too expensive (you can't pay one cent), too fragile (chargebacks, fraud, hijacked accounts). An agent needs four things:

1. **Pay any amount**, down to a thousandth of a cent, for an API call or an article.
2. **Immediate finality**: the payment settles in a second and can't be reversed.
3. **No permission to ask**: no account, no form, no border.
4. **A cost on spam**: if every request costs a little, bot farms become unaffordable. Digital scarcity becomes a defence.

Lightning, the payment network built on Bitcoin, has been doing exactly this for years. HTTP status 402, “Payment Required”, has existed since the early web; the protocols that connect it to Lightning exist, and toolkits letting agents pay for themselves over Lightning have been published since 2023. The internet's native money doesn't need inventing. It needs plugging in.

> An agent has no credit card. It has a wallet.

## Who holds the keys to your company?

Keep the keys.

For an AI to be useful, it has to know your company: your strategy, your past decisions, your customers, your processes. That is your intangible capital. Handing it in plain text to a platform you don't control turns your edge into raw material for others.

Large models are becoming commodities: they converge in capability and their price falls quarter after quarter. Value won't sit in the model, but in what you give it to read and in how you keep it. Three principles:

- **Your data, structured and yours**: a corpus in readable files, on your premises, that you can encrypt with your own keys and have read by the model of your choice.
- **Your AI, where you decide**: local when possible, with a provider under contractual guarantees otherwise, and never locked into one.
- **Your money, under your keys**: bitcoin you hold yourself, in a wallet you control.

Public-key cryptography makes sovereignty possible everywhere: over money, over payments, over data. The same technology secures Bitcoin and can seal your company's brain. We apply it to ourselves: this site is served from our own node, with no third-party script and no tracker.

> Not your keys, not your company.

## Where do you start?

You don't have to do everything. You have to choose the order. Three doors, depending on where you start:

[- **Understand**: a day of training to touch the protocol, a node, Lightning.](https://networkeffect.fr/en/training/)
[- **Decide**: a FOCUS session or a diagnosis, to know what these two shifts change for your market.](https://networkeffect.fr/en/services/strategy/)
[- **Equip**: accept bitcoin, structure your corpus, host your tools on your premises.](https://networkeffect.fr/en/services/)

## Frequently asked questions

### What do Bitcoin and AI have to do with each other?

AI makes abundant everything that can be copied: text, code, images, analysis. Bitcoin is the only money with a fixed, verifiable supply. When production costs zero, value moves to what stays scarce: context, trust, and money nobody can print. Both rest on the same cryptography and meet inside a company on three points: scarcity, agents that pay, and sovereignty over data.

### Why would an AI agent need Bitcoin?

An agent has no bank account and no card. It must pay very small amounts, instantly, without permission and across borders. Lightning, the payment network built on Bitcoin, settles a payment in a second, down to a thousandth of a cent, with no intermediary. It is currently the only rail that meets all four needs at once.

### Do I need to buy bitcoin to use AI?

No. The three convergences are independent. You can structure your corpus and host your AI on your premises without holding a single bitcoin. We present the two shifts together because they ask the leader the same question: what in my company cannot be copied, and who holds the keys to it?

### Is my data at risk with AI?

It is if you hand your strategy, customers and processes in plain text to a service you don't control. It isn't if your corpus stays on your premises, in files you own, encrypted with your keys, and read by a model under contract or locally. That is the principle behind our CORPUS service.

### Does Network Effect give investment advice?

No. We explain the protocol, its uses for a company, accounting and tax treatment in France, and we train people to hold bitcoin securely. The decision to allocate part of a treasury to bitcoin is yours, with your accountant.
